Should We Pray?

There are many possible reasons one could engage in prayer with God.

  • Gratitude and acknowledgment. You accept that God is the Creator of the universe and beyond, the all-powerful. You thank Him. You acknowledge that He is God.
  • Connection.  You engage in prayer as a method to connect or continue your connection with the All-Powerful Creator. Keeps you walking in the spirit rather than the flesh.
  • Guidance. You pray that God will guide your steps, not just for this day but all your days. Prayer for good decisions.
  • Intercessory Prayer. You are praying for others. For their guidance, their healing, their safety, etc.
  • Personal Prayer. You pray for your healing, your personal problems, and situations in life.

Does the Bible tell us to pray?

  • Pray without ceasing, 1 Thessalonians 5:17 ESV
  • Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6 ESV
  • Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11:24 ESV
  • But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Mathew 6:6 ESV
  • Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. James 5:16 ESV
  • Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Mathew 6: 9-13 ESV
  • I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; I Timothy 2:8 ESV
  • And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith. Mathew 21:22 ESV

I could continue listing many other verses that speak about prayer. In fact, the entire Bible is filled with such verses. So, yes, I think we should pray to our Father in Heaven.

Augustine of Hippo said:

In matters that are obscure and far beyond our vision, even in such as we may find treated in Holy Scripture, different Interpretations are sometimes possible without prejudice to the faith we have received. In such a case, we should not rush in headlong and so firmly take our stand on one side that, if further progress in the search of truth justly undermines this position, we too fall with it. That would be to battle not for the teaching of Holy Scripture but for our own, wishing its teaching to conform to ours, whereas we ought to wish ours to conform to that of Sacred Scripture.

Bible verse of the day

I love you, LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalm 18:1-2
