James 1:26 & Social Media

James did not mince words.  Here he is in James 1:26

“Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.”

When I read this during my morning bible study it challenged me. I love social media! The fun part of social media is we are not talking to someone face to face so we allow ourselves to say things to people we wouldn’t say otherwise.  More than one or two times a week I disagree with someone and let loose my tongue. Reading this clear instruction convicted me.

I am a Christian, so should not be letting my tongue loose on people I disagree with. Especially when it comes to politics or other non-faith issues.

I have written James 1:26 on a yellow post-it and stuck it on the edge of my monitor. Hopefully the next time I think of yelling at someone on social media I will stop myself.

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

Mark Lanier at Biblical Literacy

Augustine of Hippo said:

In matters that are obscure and far beyond our vision, even in such as we may find treated in Holy Scripture, different Interpretations are sometimes possible without prejudice to the faith we have received. In such a case, we should not rush in headlong and so firmly take our stand on one side that, if further progress in the search of truth justly undermines this position, we too fall with it. That would be to battle not for the teaching of Holy Scripture but for our own, wishing its teaching to conform to ours, whereas we ought to wish ours to conform to that of Sacred Scripture.
